A Portsmouth man faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in federal court Thursday to murder for hire in a plot to kill his friends wife.

Joseph E. Frampton, 39, of the 4600 block of Columbia St., said that he drove to Texas with the intent to kill the wife of his friend Larry E. Lingenfelter.

Frampton tried three times to carry out the plot before he was arrested after breaking into the womans home in Harker Heights, Texas, in June, according to a statement of facts he signed. The first attempt occurred in March while the woman, who was not identified, was living in Suffolk. Frampton said in court papers there were too many people around.

Frampton then drove to Texas in April after the woman moved there but again abandoned the plot because there were too many witnesses. In June, he tried again, this time breaking into the womans home wearing latex gloves, according to the statement . The woman was able to call police before being harmed.

Lingenfelter paid Frampton $2,000 of $10,000 he promised had the plot been carried out, according to the court records. Lingenfelter, the records say, was upset that he lost custody of the couples triplets and that he had to pay $1,400 a month in child support.

Lingenfelter remains charged with murder for hire. He is free on $10,000 bond. His trial is scheduled for Jan. 4. Frampton, who is in jail without bond, is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 9.

A young Asian man who boarded an Air Canada flight in Hong Kong elaborately disguised as an elderly white male is seeking refugee status in Canada, in what border officials are calling an “unbelievable case of concealment.”

An internal intelligence alert from the Canada Border Services Agency shows before-and-after photos and describes how the man boarded the flight in Hong Kong on Oct. 29 wearing a silicone mask to make him look like an elderly man. A Canadian government official gave the alert to The Associated Press on Friday on condition of anonymity, as the official was not authorized to release it publicly.

The passenger was seen at the start of the flight as an “elderly Caucasian male who appeared to have young looking hands,” the border agencys bulletin said. Later in the flight, however, “the subject attended the washroom and emerged an Asian looking male that appeared to be in his early 20s.”

The document says the man had a bag that contained a “disguise kit which consisted of a silicone type head and neck mask of an elderly Caucasian male, a brown leather cap, glasses and a thin brown cardigan.”

The bulletin, headlined “Unbelievable Case of Concealment,” said information about a possible impostor was received by Air Canada corporate security .

It said the man later admitted to officials that he had boarded the flight with the mask on and removed it several hours later. The bulletin said officials believe the man and another man performed a swap of boarding passes . The government official said a U.S. passport also was involved.

Chris McCluskey, a spokesman for Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, said a man is in detention and the matter is before the Immigration and Refugee Board. A spokeswoman for the board declined to comment.

Air Canada confirmed that a passenger on a flight from Hong Kong had been met by border services officials in Vancouver, British Columbia.

A Norfolk man was sentenced to spend 20 years in prison after being convicted of robbing and trying to kill another man in August 2009.

Circuit Judge Junius P. Fulton III on Friday imposed a sentence recommended by a jury in the case of Tarek Z. Cherry, 19, who was convicted in August of attempted murder, robbery and two felony weapons charges.

In an unrelated case, Cherry was a suspect in the homicide of Maury High School football player Charles Humphrey, 18. Humphrey was shot Jan. 4, 2009, in Park Place after he attended a party.

Cherry was charged with Humphreys murder but prosecutors withdrew the charges because of a lack of evidence.

Assistant Commonwealths Attorney Lyn Simmons said Friday that Humphreys death remains under investigation. Prosecutors have the right to bring the charges back if they choose to.

In the robbery case, Cherry and another man were accused of stealing a Madden football video game from Joseph Anifowose . Cherry held a .25-caliber handgun to Anifowoses head and pulled the trigger twice, but the weapon didnt fire.

The robbery happened in the 7500 block of Tidewater Drive about a month after the murder charge against Cherry was dropped.

After Fridays hearing, Anifowose, 22, said he felt relieved.

“I feel just safer, honestly, knowing that I never have to face him again,” he said.

A sailor aboard the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, he was robbed about a month after he returned home from a 13-month deployment.

When asked if he wanted to make a statement to the court before he was sentenced, Cherry – wearing dark green jail scrubs with his ankles shackled together – declined.

“I felt more disgusted that he didnt apologize to me,” Anifowose said. “I feel hes just real stubborn about the whole situation. Like he hasnt learned at all.”

Cherry was ordered to spend 12 years on probation after his release.
