Tough veteran for McPhilbin

Boxing: Bulwell cruiserweight Shane McPhilbin takes on Hastings Rasani at the Grove LC in Balderton on November 20.

The man from Zimbabwe is an 81-fight veteran. He has lost his last 11 but will present McPhilbin (5-3-3-2) with a stern test.

“Shane is training a couple of times a week and is down to 15st now,” said his new manager, Carl Greaves. “His display against Michael Sprott in the Prizefighter tournament has done his confidence the world of good.

“Several people in the game have telephoned me and said he could have a bright future if he works hard. And I am trying to drill that into him.”

Nottinghams Terry Maughan should get a win under his belt against Matt Seawright (39-3-34-2), while busy Ryan Clark – who has already been out 17 times this year – takes on Danny Gerrard, who is making his pro debut.

The other fights are Kevin Hammond v Luke Osman; AA Lowe v Rocky Chakir and Jamie Norkett v Sabie Montieth. Tickets are Pounds 30.

Greaves was full of praise for former world champion Roy Jones jnr who appeared at Newark Showground last week.

“What a nice fellow,” said Greaves. “It was a fantastic night and he stayed signing autographs for fans until well gone midnight.

“Not many superstars would do that.”
